ABOUT
Jay Downs
I came up in clubs.
That turned into a job most people do not know exists. Clubs would hire me to open a room: build the music format, hire the DJs, train them, then hand it over and do it again somewhere else. Countless rooms across the region, including DV8, Electra, Backbeat, Vertigo, Passage, Sycamore Gardens, Rumba Room at The Waterfront, Red Cheetah, The Exchange, Renaissance, and many others.
Alongside that, long standing regional residencies and festival work in Europe and on the West Coast.
What that teaches you is not a bigger record collection and the same playlist as the club next door. It is how a room works, and why. Why one song empties a floor and the next one fills it. Why a night that peaks too early never recovers. When to leave a room alone.
Private events came later. Same skills, different rooms. P&G, Kroger, the Human Rights Campaign, weddings and private events. From a dark club at 3am to the poshest of weddings or formal galas, there is one constant: my job is to observe, respond, and make people move.
I take a limited number of events each year. That is not a position. I play every one of them myself, and there are only so many Saturdays. If I take your event, I am not working another one that night, and the person you plan with is the person behind the decks.
I still buy music every week.
